Breaking "They"

This was inspired by common thought..... and Mary Tyler Moore.
I’ve often wondered why people always attribute things to this odd group called “they”. This piece was an attempt for me to walk away from the pressure I have felt from this group of “they”. To stop trying to live up to what I have thought “they” expected of me. And also simply my musing on the who’s and the what’s of this group.
“They” is really another name for the expected and assumed norm’.
Christ called us to live a life which went against commonness; to Love with a selflessness that the world will call foolish, to depend not on tangibles for our security, and to serve regardless of the response.

Breaking “they”

A small group huddled in the back of a windowless corner.
Wide eyes and mouths that continually open and close producing words, like a treasure chest in a child’s fish tank spews out air that is unique to the watery environment and fades quickly only to be replaced by the next burst.
There is less of them then is commonly thought, but "they" fill the room with noise that rises out of the rafters and spills into the sky and street. It is a thick heavy noise, the kind that one does not simply hear, but settles in ones brain.
I believe they are a really small collection of people with abnormally large mouths. “They” have small ears, listening is not their specialty.
“they” examine people like a mother in a produce section they chose the topic most ripe and place them on a scale, carefully watching to see if the chosen one will make they cut. “They” have a harsh limited vocabulary which contains almost no poetry or truth.
Every one fears that “they” will speak their name, yet to be spoken of by them seems to be the drive of most rational people.
The murmurs from this small group have the effect of the last snowflake that started the avalanche. Their judgments are the first breeze of a hurricane. Marriages crumble at their disapproval. Schools of limited thought are built and the smell of burned books fills the air. Predictions from “they” have driven up the sales of bomb shelters and suspicion in the hearts of neighbors. Because “they” have said that truth can be uncomfortable and upset the status quo, mothers have hidden bruises and children have lost their youth in silence. “they” have effected government by creating an assumed thought of “the people”. Every now and then someone attempts to understand who “they” are and to stop to their ceaseless chatter.
But “they” are to valued to us. A favorite stuffed animal that comes in the form of a harsh brick. Yet it is familiar and so we cuddle it close and refuse to notice its shape or weight.
